Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression (MILD Procedure) for Spinal Stenosis

The MILD procedure is a safe, effective, FDA-approved, non-surgical procedure that can help patients diagnosed with Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS) stand longer and walk farther with less pain.  It is a short, outpatient procedure that is performed through a tiny incision, smaller than a baby aspirin. It does not require general anesthesia, implants, or stitches.

What is Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS)?

LSS is a condition where the spinal canal narrows and compresses the spinal cord nerves in your lower back.  The condition may cause pain, numbness, or tingling in your lower back, legs or buttocks, limiting your ability to stand or walk.  Usually, LSS is found in people over 50 years of age, and the likelihood of developing LSS increases as we age.

What are the Symptoms of LSS?

If you are experiencing pain, numbness or tingling in your lower back, legs, or buttocks that increases when you walk or stand, but subsides when you sit or bend forward, then you may be suffering from LSS.  At CPC, our doctors will determine whether you have a type of LSS that can be treated by the MILD procedure.

How Does the MILD Procedure Work?

The doctor will use an imaging machine and specialized tools to remove small pieces of bone and excess ligament tissue through a tiny incision in your back.  After these elements are removed, space is restored in the spinal canal. As a result, the compression of the nerves is decreased, which reduces pain and restores mobility.

What Will it Accomplish?

Patients typically experience a significant reduction in pain, and significant increase in mobility.  In addition, the MILD procedure has been proven to have a very low risk of major complications.
