Common Back & Spine Pain Conditions
We treat all types of back and spine pain. Below are some common conditions that irritate the back and spine:
Congenital Spinal Problems
A congenital spinal problem is a spinal condition that is present at birth due to abnormal development of the spine in the womb. These conditions can affect the vertebrae, spinal cord, or surrounding structures and may lead to curvature, instability, or neurological issues. Common examples include scoliosis, spina bifida, congenital kyphosis, and hemivertebrae. The severity and symptoms vary widely, some individuals may have mild structural differences with little impact, while others may experience pain, limited mobility, or neurological complications requiring medical or surgical intervention.
Common symptoms of congenital spinal problems include visible spinal curvature, back pain or stiffness, and uneven shoulders, hips, or waistline. Patients may also experience limited spinal mobility, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs, balance or gait issues, and in severe cases, bladder or bowel dysfunction. Mild cases may present with few or no noticeable symptoms.
Degenerative Disc Disease
- Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is a condition in which the intervertebral discs, the soft, cushioning structures between the vertebrae, gradually break down or lose hydration and elasticity over time. This degeneration can lead to chronic back or neck pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. DDD may also contribute to other spinal issues such as herniated discs, bone spurs, or spinal stenosis, as the discs lose their ability to absorb shock and maintain proper spacing between vertebrae. While aging is the most common cause, injury, repetitive stress, or genetics can accelerate the process.
Common symptoms of degenerative disc disease include chronic back or neck pain that may worsen with movement, stiffness, and reduced flexibility. Pain can radiate to the arms or legs if nearby nerves are affected. Other symptoms may include numbness, tingling, or weakness in the extremities, occasional flare-ups of sharp or shooting pain, and discomfort that worsens with sitting, bending, or lifting.
Failed Back Surgery Syndrome
Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) is a condition in which patients continue to experience persistent or recurring back and/or leg pain after undergoing spinal surgery. It can result from a variety of factors, including incomplete relief of the original problem, scar tissue formation, nerve damage, recurrent disc herniation, or spinal instability. Symptoms often include chronic back pain, leg pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness, and can significantly impact mobility and quality of life. FBSS is managed through a combination of conservative treatments, pain management therapies, and in some cases, additional surgical or interventional procedures.
Common symptoms of Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) include persistent or recurring back pain, leg pain, or sciatica following spinal surgery. Patients may also experience numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs, limited mobility, stiffness, and difficulty performing daily activities. Pain may be constant or intermittent and can vary in intensity, often affecting quality of life and functional ability.
Herniated Discs
A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner material of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tougher exterior. This can irritate nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, or weakness. Herniated discs are most common in the lower back, but can also occur in the neck.
Symptoms may include sharp or burning pain in the back, buttocks, or legs, numbness or tingling in the limbs, muscle weakness, and pain that worsens with movement, coughing, or sitting.
Lower Back Pain or Spondylosis
Lower back pain refers to discomfort or pain in the area of the spine between the bottom of the ribcage and the top of the legs. It can result from muscle strain, ligament injury, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or other spinal conditions. Symptoms can range from a dull, constant ache to sharp, shooting pain and may be accompanied by stiffness, limited mobility, or pain radiating into the legs. Lower back pain can be acute (short-term) or chronic (lasting more than three months) and is one of the most common causes of disability and missed work.
Common symptoms of lower back pain include a dull or sharp ache in the lower spine, stiffness, and reduced flexibility. Pain may radiate into the buttocks, hips, or legs, sometimes causing numbness, tingling, or weakness. Symptoms often worsen with bending, lifting, prolonged sitting, or twisting, and can range from mild discomfort to severe, disabling pain.
Sciatica
Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg. It is usually caused by compression or irritation of a spinal nerve root, often from a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or bone spurs. Symptoms can include sharp, burning, or shooting pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the leg or foot, and pain that worsens with sitting, standing, or certain movements.
Common symptoms of sciatica include sharp, burning, or shooting pain that radiates from the lower back or buttock down one leg. Patients may also experience numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected leg or foot, and pain that worsens with sitting, standing, coughing, or sudden movements. Symptoms typically affect only one side of the body.
Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is a condition in which the spinal canal narrows, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. This narrowing can occur in the neck (cervical spine) or lower back (lumbar spine) and is commonly caused by aging, arthritis, herniated discs, or thickened ligaments. The compression can lead to pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the back, legs, or arms, and may affect balance, walking, and overall mobility. Spinal stenosis can develop gradually and worsen over time if left untreated.
Common symptoms of spinal stenosis include back or neck pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or legs, and difficulty walking or maintaining balance. Patients may also experience cramping, fatigue in the legs, or a feeling of heaviness that worsens with standing or walking and improves when sitting or leaning forward.
Vertebral Compression Fractures
A vertebral compression fracture occurs when one of the bones in the spine (vertebrae) collapses or is crushed, often due to osteoporosis, trauma, or cancer-related weakening of the bone. This collapse can lead to sudden back pain, loss of height, spinal deformity (such as kyphosis), and limited mobility. The severity of symptoms varies depending on the extent of the fracture and the number of vertebrae affected, and untreated fractures can contribute to chronic pain and spinal instability.
Common symptoms of vertebral compression fractures include sudden, severe back pain, tenderness over the affected vertebra, loss of height, and a hunched or stooped posture. Patients may also experience limited spinal mobility, pain that worsens with standing or walking, and in some cases, numbness or tingling if nerve compression occurs.
Sacroiliitis
Often confused with hip pain, Sacroiliitis is painful inflammation in the joints where the spine connects to the pelvis in the sacroiliac joints. It can occur when something irritates the joint where the spine meets the pelvis and is often caused by an accident, fall, or changes to how you walk to account for the pain.
Lower back pain that gets worse sitting or standing in one position for a long time, a sudden sharp or stabbing sensation, a constant dull ache, or stiffness first thing in the morning, usually for more than an hour every time you wake up.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition that causes the cartilage between bones to break down over time. When it affects the spine, it can lead to pain, stiffness, and inflammation in the joints of the back or neck.
Symptoms include joint stiffness and pain in the back or neck, limited range of motion, swelling around the affected joints, and discomfort that worsens with activity and improves with rest.
