At Comprehensive Pain Consultants, we offer advanced, non-surgical treatments that go beyond masking symptoms.

Our board-certified pain specialists create personalized plans using targeted therapies like nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulation, and minimally-invasive procedures to calm overactive nerves and help you regain control.

Common Nerve Pain Conditions

We diagnose and treat many forms of nerve pain and nerve-related conditions. Below are some of the most common types we help patients manage every day:

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition that typically affects an arm or leg after an injury, surgery, stroke, or heart attack. It is characterized by prolonged or excessive pain, often disproportionate to the original injury, along with changes in skin color, temperature, and texture, swelling, and abnormal sweating. CRPS may also cause muscle weakness, stiffness, and limited mobility. The exact cause is not fully understood, but it involves malfunctioning of the peripheral and central nervous systems, leading to an exaggerated pain response.

Common symptoms of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) include severe, persistent pain in an arm or leg that is disproportionate to the original injury. Other symptoms may include swelling, stiffness, changes in skin color or temperature, abnormal sweating, sensitivity to touch, and limited mobility. Over time, muscle weakness, tremors, and changes in hair or nail growth may also occur.
Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) is a type of nerve damage that occurs in people with diabetes, primarily affecting the feet and hands. High blood sugar levels over time can injure peripheral nerves, leading to pain, numbness, tingling, or burning sensations. DPN can also cause weakness, loss of coordination, and increased risk of injuries or infections in the affected areas. Early detection and proper blood sugar management are essential to slow progression and reduce complications.

Common Symptoms of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread muscle pain, tenderness, and fatigue. It is often accompanied by sleep disturbances, memory issues (“fibro fog”), headaches, and mood disorders such as anxiety or depression. The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to involve abnormal pain processing in the central nervous system, making the body more sensitive to pain signals. Symptoms can fluctuate in intensity and may be triggered or worsened by stress, weather changes, or physical activity.

Common symptoms of fibromyalgia include widespread muscle pain and tenderness, persistent fatigue, and sleep disturbances. Patients may also experience headaches, difficulty concentrating (“fibro fog”), stiffness, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, and mood disturbances such as anxiety or depression. Symptoms often fluctuate in intensity and can be triggered or worsened by stress, physical activity, or changes in weather.

Migraines

Migraines are a type of recurrent headache disorder characterized by moderate to severe throbbing or pulsating pain, usually on one side of the head. They are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light (photophobia), and sensitivity to sound (phonophobia). Some individuals experience aura, visual disturbances, tingling, or other neurological symptoms, before the headache begins. Migraines can last from a few hours to several days and may significantly interfere with daily activities.

Common symptoms of migraines include moderate to severe, throbbing or pulsating headache, often on one side of the head. Patients may also experience nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and in some cases, visual disturbances or tingling sensations known as an aura. Migraines can last from a few hours to several days and may interfere with daily activities.

Myofascial Pain

Myofascial pain is a chronic muscle condition caused by the formation of sensitive knots, or trigger points, in the connective tissue surrounding muscles, known as fascia. It results in aching or throbbing pain, which can be localized to the trigger point or spread to other areas of the body (referred pain). Common causes include muscle injury, repetitive movements, stress, poor posture, and certain metabolic or vitamin deficiencies.

Common symptoms of myofascial pain include localized muscle pain, tenderness, and stiffness, often associated with trigger points, tight, sensitive areas within the muscle. Patients may experience aching or burning sensations that can radiate to other areas, muscle weakness, restricted range of motion, and discomfort that worsens with activity or stress. Headaches and sleep disturbances are also common in some cases.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage in the peripheral nervous system (nerves outside the brain and spinal cord) that causes symptoms like numbness, tingling, pain, muscle weakness, and problems with balance or balance. It can affect sensory, motor, or autonomic nerves, leading to a wide range of issues from foot drop to digestive problems, and is commonly caused by conditions like diabetes, infections, toxins, or injuries.

Common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include numbness, tingling, burning, or sharp pain in the hands and feet. Patients may also experience muscle weakness, loss of coordination or balance, sensitivity to touch, and in severe cases, difficulty walking or performing daily activities. Symptoms often begin in the extremities and may progress over time.

Phantom Limb Pain

Phantom limb pain is a type of pain that occurs in a limb that has been partially or completely amputated. Despite the absence of the limb, patients feel sensations such as burning, stabbing, cramping, or tingling, as if the limb were still present. This phenomenon is caused by changes in the brain and nervous system, which continue to send pain signals from nerves that previously served the missing limb. The intensity and frequency of phantom limb pain can vary and may significantly affect quality of life.

Common symptoms of phantom limb pain include sensations of burning, stabbing, shooting, cramping, or tingling in the area of a missing limb. Patients may also feel as though the limb is twisted, bent, or in an uncomfortable position, and the pain can range from mild to severe. Symptoms often occur intermittently but can be persistent and may be triggered by stress, weather changes, or pressure on the residual limb.

Shingles

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. It typically presents as a painful, blistering rash that appears on one side of the body or face, often following a nerve path. Early symptoms can include burning, tingling, or itching, and the rash may be accompanied by fever, headache, or fatigue. Shingles can lead to complications such as postherpetic neuralgia, a persistent nerve pain that continues even after the rash heals.

Common symptoms of shingles include a painful, burning, or tingling sensation on one side of the body, often followed by a red, blistering rash that develops along a nerve path. Other symptoms may include itching, sensitivity to touch, fever, headache, fatigue, and in some cases, lingering nerve pain known as postherpetic neuralgia after the rash resolves.

Radiculopathy

Radiculopathy is caused by compression or irritation of a nerve root in the spine. This can happen in the neck (cervical), mid-back (thoracic), or lower back (lumbar).

Shooting pain, numbness, or tingling that follows a nerve path, often from the neck down the arm or the lower back into the legs. Radiculopathy may also cause muscle weakness or coordination issues.
