About Kyphoplasty & Benefits

When a fracture of the vertebra occurs—typically due to trauma or osteoporosis—kyphoplasty procedures can be performed. Kyphoplasty is a vertebral augmentation surgery that involves injecting acrylic bone cement into the fracture. This treatment can provide pain relief and improve spinal support and function by restoring the damaged vertebra’s height.

The end goal of the kyphoplasty treatment is to improve the patient’s quality of life! Learn more about Kyphoplasty procedure at our Asheville pain relief center right here.

The Procedure

  • Before the procedure begins, your pain doctor will administer local or general anesthetic.

  • The surgeon will insert a needle into the spin through the skin. They will use X-ray imaging to guide the needle to the correct area of the spine.

  • Then a small device called a balloon tamp will be placed through the needle and into the fractured vertebra.

  • The balloon will then be inflated, helping to restore the height of the vertebra.

  • The pain doctor then removes the balloon tamp. This will leave a cavity that is then injected with acrylic bone cement to prevent it from collapsing.

  • No stitches are needed, and the procedure takes an hour or less to complete depending on how many vertebrae need to be treated.

Recovery Time

For most patients, you’ll be allowed to go home the same day of your procedure however sometimes you’ll be asked to stay overnight for monitoring. There is a possibility that you’ll feel some soreness in your back where the needle was inserted, but this typically only lasts a few days.

Most people can go back to their normal activities right away. It’s important to discuss with your pain doctor what activities should be avoided after the procedure. You pain doctor may also recommend you take certain vitamins in order to strengthen your bones and prevent future spinal fractures.
